Full Physical Path to Your Home/web Root Directory

Occasionally when configuring a script you will be asked to specify the physical path to the web root or home directory area of your account. A few common paths are outlined below.

Home Root

The path to your home root directory, which is not directly accessible via HTTP, is: /home/username where “username” is the username of your account. If your username was “roc” then the path to your home root would be: /home/roc

Web Root

The path to your web root directory, which is directly accessible via HTTP, is: /home/username/public_html where “username” is the username of your account. If your domain name was “rochenhost.com” and your username was “roc” when visiting http://rochenhost.com then this would load files located at: /home/roc/public_html. The public_html folder is where you need to upload your website files.

Sub Domain Web Root

The path to a sub domain web root directory, which is directly accessible via HTTP, is typically: /home/username/public_html/subdomain where “username” is the username of your account and “subdomain” is the name of the sub domain itself. If your domain name was “rochenhost.com”, your username was “roc” and you had setup a sub domain called “testing” when visiting http://testing.rochenhost.com then this would load files located at: /home/roc/public_html/testing.

Please take note that any files you wish not to be publicly accessible over the internet should be stored outside of your web root (public_html) directory.
