Previously anytime an account was setup with an SSL certificate it required a dedicated IP address to properly function. Not only did this incur a monthly fee for the customer, but as IPv4 space is rapidly depleting, web hosting providers like Rochen need to be doing everything we can to conserve usage.
Rochen’s new Premium Web Hosting and Managed Cloud Server (MCS) platforms takes advantage of a technology called Server Name Indication (SNI). SNI allows for multiple sites with SSL certificates to operate from a single IP address. This means that you no longer require a dedicated IP address (and incur the associated costs) for sites with SSL certificates.
SNI is compatible with most modern web browsers –
- Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista or later
- Firefox 2 or later
- Safari 3 on Mac OS 10.5.6 or later
- Opera 8 or later
- Android Honeycomb or later
- iOS 4 or later
- Windows Phone 7 or later
For customers who still wish to operate an SSL certificate using a dedicated IP address to ensure compatibility with older web browsers, a dedicated IP address is still available for purchase. We think that SNI offers a great solution and cost savings for most users.
If you’re already a customer and looking to get an SSL certificate setup then our support team is standing by to assist. Simply open a ticket via the My Rochen portal. If you’ve not signed up yet then we hope to welcome you aboard at Rochen soon.
